Growing a Maze
Growing a maize maze!
The most common question in the maze is without a doubt, "How do you grow a Maze?" Well, we are going to let you in on a little secret here and show you the process happening in 2003. With a little help from the world renowned Adrian Fisher’s design skills, this year’s design is currently being planned.
How does it grow?
The maze used is animal fodder seed. The field is fertilised with animal manure and then ploughed in March. The field is given a coat of lime to lessen acidity. The field is then prepared and the seed is sown at the end of April.
When the crop is five inches high a GPS specialist flies over for a few days and maps out the maze design as produced by Adrian Fisher. A number of staff then follow the specialist and hoe the maze out by hand. A week later the paths are rotovated to make them as smooth as possible. The bridges and towers are then constructed within the maze. Maintenance is continued daily to ensure optimal growth which is why we make such a point of staying on the paths as the plants are irreplaceable.
Stage 1
The ground is prepared, drilled seed is sown evenly through the soil.
Stage 2
The maze is plotted by an independent GPS company who fly in from the UK
and use the latest satellite navigation equipment!
Stage 3
The small plants are hoed and the maze paths are created within the pre-arranged pattern
